Stutton Community Shop - History

01473 328133

Probably the biggest news item to arrive in Stutton since the shock discovery that David Lock’s brassicas had club root, was the opening of the new shop in January 2018.

For a village our size it’s a major achievement and something of which we should all be proud. When the old village shop closed back in 2005 it left the nearest shop two miles away in Holbrook; inconvenient for many and impossible for some, especially older people and those without transport.

This situation was resolved by a group of residents getting together, setting up a Community Interest Company and by December 2008 a shop was up and running in a Portakabin beside the Community Hall.  Run entirely by volunteers, within a couple of years it had paid back the start-up loans and proved to be a real asset to our village.

The Portakabin was an ugly duckling and it served its purpose, but it wasn’t getting any younger. So in the summer of 2015 the first plans began for a new shop.  A work committee was put together, Roger Baldwin from Felixstowe was appointed architect, planning permission secured, Parky - our local builder - was chosen to build it, structural engineers in Hadleigh got going on their calculations and the roof structure was manufactured in Devon. Around £140,000 for the project was required, raised with grants from Power to Change and Babergh District Council and with lots of donations from the village. Finally, in 2018 we opened in our beautiful new building and the shop has gone from strength to strength.

It finally closed in 2005, leaving the residents of Stutton with a two mile trip to Holbrook for their nearest shop.

There was a shop on the corner for as long as anyone can remember.
